Last month fashion lovers from across the region and beyond rejoiced at the highly anticipated return of Caribbean Fashion Week, hosted by Pulse at the gorgeous Villa Ronai in Stony Hill, Kingston.
The show was largely dominated by designers from Trinidad & Tobago and, of course, Jamaica, but this year saw the added twist of an African connection, with a number of top designers from Nigeria, reflecting Pulse?s recent foray into the global market.
Trinidad was ably represented by Claudia Pegus, who showcased both resort and couture collections, the former mixing white cottons with African-inspired colours, and the latter maintaining her trademark sexy and effortless style. Robert Young?s The Cloth also included two collections, one for women and one for men, with both demonstrating his obvious love for the environment, incorporating natural materials such as cotton and linen. Meiling demoed her Anthony Reid collection, with modern, elegant, and chic trousers and shirts, cut to perfection.
Jamaican designer Jeneil Williams, known for her athletic lifestyle, launched her line of activewear, with clothing to wear at the gym, for running errands, or for lounging in, while drennaLuna showcased a capsule of all-black pieces, comprising lame, silk and cotton, and proving that back really is a color for all occasions. Finally, Mutamba presented a line of effortless, casual pieces that truly embrace her Afro-Caribbean heritage in a way that only she can.
However, it was the Nigerian visitors that really stole the show. Mai Atafu showcased pure high-end luxury for both men and women, with an incredible choice of fabrics, impeccable tailoring and precision cuts, while Tokyo James mixed traditional fabrics with faux leather to create an edgy, urban style, and Ituen Basi combined vibrant colours with a variety of different fabrics and sharp cuts, whilst remaining feminine and fun.
All in all, a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing what 2020 has in store!
